The phrase `small is beautiful’ could have been coined specifically with Ecuador in mind. By South American standards, Ecuador is tiny, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in diversity. Here, one can watch dawn break over the jungle canopy, have lunch high in the Andes, then watch the sun slip into the Pacific Oceanall on the same day. Lying just over 600 miles offshore are the Galapagos Islands, inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution and without a doubt the greatest wildlife show on Earth. Footprint’s highly acclaimed guide is essential for all travelers wishing to get to grips with this small but perfectly formed country.

I am planning on spending next summer with my fiance’s family in Ecuador. Because I am a Zoology major and an aspiring zoo keeper, I am ecstatic about the idea of being able to visit the Galapagos. I realize that the area is highly protected because of its diversity and importance to the animal kingdom, but are there and programs that I can volunteer or intern with to help with animal conservation and protection while I am in Ecuador?

Situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1000 km from the South American continent, these 19 islands and the surrounding marine reserve have been called a unique ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. Located at the confluence of three ocean currents, the Galápagos are a ‘melting pot’ of marine species. Ongoing seismic and volcanic activity reflects the processes that formed the islands. These processes, together with the extreme isolation of the islands, led to the development of unusual animal life — such as the land iguana, the giant tortoise and the many types of … whc.unesco.org
