Ecuador & Galapagos Handbook, 7th: Travel guide to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands (Footprint Ecuador and Galapagos Handbook)

The phrase `small is beautiful’ could have been coined specifically with Ecuador in mind. By South American standards, Ecuador is tiny, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in diversity. Here, one can watch dawn break over the jungle canopy, have lunch high in the Andes, then watch the sun slip into the Pacific Ocean—all on the same day. Lying just over 600 miles offshore are the Galapagos Islands, inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution and without a doubt the greatest wildlife show on Earth. Footprint’s highly acclaimed guide is essential for all travelers wishing to get to grips with this small but perfectly formed country.

A few months ago PADI Course Director Andy Phillips contacted me for a rebreather trip to the Galapagos Islands. Here are his impressions on diving in the Galapagos Islands in a Closed Circuit Rebreather. More information at www.galapagosrebreathers.com or www.tecrec-ecuador.blogspot.com.

Part 1 focuses primarily on Sea Lions and Iguanas. Part 1 of 3, Episode one of the documentary series: Sea Trek, with Martha Holmes and Michael deGruy. One of the far more obscure shows and documentary series from the BBC. Sea Trek dated back to 1992, has seldom been repeated (if ever) and has long been out of production on VHS video. No DVD release has been made. At the time, the plastic bubble equipment and being able to talk underwater was pretty revolutionary.

A few months ago PADI Course Director Andy Phillips contacted me (Jorge A. Mahauad) for a rebreather trip to the Galapagos Islands. After sorting out the import of Sofnolime and rebreather cylinders, finding a reliable source of medical grade oxygen and many other main points of full rebreather support service in the Galapagos Islands was confirmed to Andy. Andy finally arrived here on August 12. He was the first rebreather diver to be fully supported in the Galapagos Islands by a local rebreather diver and instructor. Sofnolime 8-12, rebreather cylinders, oxygen at 200 bar, booster pump, transfilling whips and adapters were provided to him. Galapagos: The Islands That Changed the World

Galapagos: The Islands That Changed the World

Rocky, fragile, beautiful, strange—the Galápagos archipelago is unlike any other place on earth. Its geology, its unique flora and fauna, and its striking role in human history intersect in surprising and dynamic ways. This book is the most wide-ranging and beautifully illustrated book available on the famous islands. Not since Darwin’s Naturalist’s Voyage has a book combined so much scientific and historic information with firsthand accounts that bring the Galápagos to life.
Galápagos: The Islands That Changed the World describes how tragedy and murderous pirates curtailed settlement of the islands and how the islands’ pristine nature, spectacular geology, and defining isolation inspired Darwin’s ideas about evolution. The book explores the diverse land and marine habitats that shelter Galápagos species and considers the islands’ importance today as a frontier for science and a refuge for true wilderness.
The book’s extensive gazetteer provides details about endemic plants and animals as well as travel advice about visitors’ sites, diving, photography, when to go, and what to take. Vividly illustrated throughout, this guide is an indispensable reference for natural history enthusiasts, armchair travelers, and island visitors alike.
