Choose one of the following organisms to research: Galapagos Tortoise Use the links on the Resources tab to gather the following information for the organism of your choice: How long has the species has been in existence? 2-3 million years. They were discovered in 1845. How has the organism changed or adapted over time? In different areas tortoises have different shell types (domed or saddle back). What special adaptations does the organism have for survival? Tortoises that live in sparse vegetation have saddle back shells to get food from higher places. Also, they have longer legs to get food from trees and such. How did the animal get to the Galapagos Islands? Naturalists believe Tortoises arrived in the islands clinging to a piece of driftwood from a river mouth along the Pacific Coast. From what organism on the continent is the organism on the Galapagos Island most closely related to? related to the Galapagos Tortoise lives on the South American mainland
Charles Darwin goes to the Galapagos Islands and notices that Turtles are different from Island to Island. He decided this means that Animals develop by adapting to their habitats, and came up with a hypothesis on evolution. – Is this inductive or deductive thinking?
1.Scientific theories, such as the theory of evolution, must be
neither testable nor observable
testable and observable
observable ( i pick this one)
testable
2.Natural selection does not
select what a species needs.
make favorable traits more common.
help populations adapt. ( i picked this one)
cause changes in a population
3.Darwin studied specific species of animals on the Galapagos Islands and other places
similar species in different areas with unique traits.
all birds have the same size beaks. ( i picked this one)
giant turtles live longer than other species because of their large hearts.
fossils hold the key to the past.
4.According to the theory of evolution ______ traits will become common in a population over time.
recessive
female
male (i picked this one)
favorable
5.According to the scientific theory of evolution
individuals have the same genes.
only dominant traits are passed on from parent to offspring.
populations change over time in response to changes in the environment. (i picked this one)
populations never change
6.According to the scientific theory of evolution
individuals have the same genes. (i picked this one)
only dominant traits are passed on from parent to offspring.
populations change over time in response to changes in the environment.
populations never change
7.A genotype describes
what an individual looks like
how an individual will pass on traits
how long an individual will live
the genetic make up of an individual (i picked this one)

My daughter would like to see a real Galapagos Tortoise.
Anyone know if there are any in a zoo here on the east coast?
NC, GA, SC, FL?
I remember seeing one at an Alligator Farm when I was a little girl.
I don’t remember where though.
Any ideas?
She wants to see one and she loves turtles.
